Your museum in the classroom

Abingdon County Hall Museum is now closed for major redevelopment work to take place.  The new displays and a bright new education and community space will reopen in Spring 2012.

While we are closed the museum is offering a FREE bookable outreach service for Abingdon schools from January 2011.  Each 45 minute pilot workshop will be led by experienced museum staff.  All workshops are hands on, cross curricular and linked to national curriculum objectives and learning outcomes..

There are 3 workshops to choose from:

KS1 How we used to Live 

Discover what life was like for the servants and family living in a wealthy Victorian household in Abingdon. Children will handle and discuss a variety of everyday objects from flat irons to china cups in this active and lively workshop.

By taking part in this workshop your pupils will build on the following skills:

·    Active participation in speaking, listening, group discussion and interaction
·    Understanding chronology, knowledge and understanding, change and continuity over time
·    Knowledge and understanding of materials
·    The understanding of forces and motion

KS2 and KS3 Past into Present 

How did a Palaeolithic axe work?  What were 17th Century smoking pipes made from, and what exactly is a '45'?

You can find out the answers to these questions and more by taking part in this active session which travels through time from the past into the present.  Many of the objects which pupils will handle in this session were made by or belonged to people in Abingdon.

By taking part in this workshop your pupils will build on the following skills:

·    Active participation in speaking, listening, group discussion and interaction
·    Understanding of chronology, knowledge and understanding, change and continuity and enquiry skills
·    Knowledge and understanding of materials and their properties
·    Knowledge and understanding of design, materials and their function

KS2 and KS3  Roman Abingdon 

What did the Romans do for Abingdon and is there evidence to prove it?  Pupils turn archaeologists in this hands on investigation exploring an intriguing part of the town’s past.

By taking part in this workshop your pupils will build on the following skills:

·    Knowledge and understanding, enquiry skills and continuity and change
·    Speaking, listening and group interaction
·    Knowledge and understanding of design, materials and their function
